St Peters High School Kayak Program 2007
I have just returned from New Zelaand where I returned for the fourth time to run the St Peters High School Outdoor Education Whitewater Kayaking Program. This course is undoubtedly one of the best high school paddling programs I have come across. 3 groups, 5 days of paddling per group with a focus on skill development, leadership and river safety, small ratios (1:3 max), enthusiatic motivated students and a great river to boot. We run the course on the Mohaka River in the Central North Island of New Zealand. This river comprises three sections one after the other progressing from Class I to Class III. This course incoprporates all three sections, utilising the Class I and II sections for skill development and 'playing' culminating with the Class III 'Te Hoe' section on the final day(s) This year was as good if not better than ever, with small group sizes, super motivated students and mostly good weather (sorry group 2) the paddling performance went through the roof. Enough of the blabber a big thanks to Jeremy Cutler of St Peters School for organising the trip year after year as it takes a tonne of time and energy on his behalf and to Matt Burton and Richard Powell of Adventure Trippin Travel for doing a great job assisting me on the course.
